The whole point is that we do not need a devil; we have evil within us, each and every one of us, that will tempt us. For instance, in his movie(book: Wonderful Ice Cream Suit, everyone is 'real'. All those characters were based on people Ray knew. Media is also the strongest influence in our present culture.
