Description: One onion only provides about 1.5 Volts.. Not enough to really charge an iPod. USB ports provide 5Volts @100mA to 500mA 3 Volts is enough to turn on the iPods charging logic and get it going and two onions in series does the jerb!

Yes USB is 5V If you had read the description you might learn that 3Volts is enough to trigger the iPod and also charge the unit It runs on 3.0 volts internally.
