Oh I hear you, it's something that any sane, rational person thinks about, especially when you've dealt with a loved one who has suffered with it. They have better ways of spotting the early onset of Alzheimer's now and there are better and better treatments being developed all the time. Of course you're going to think about it though, I know exactly what you're talking about. I share that same fear, it's best not to worry about it though. Hopefully stemcells will provide a cure.

I'm scared I may develop it someday. It's really no way to live. I mean you're not even living at that point, you're existing. But this is the obsession people have with life, they can't tell the difference between quality and quantity.

That's part of the heartbreak of Alzheimers, you start losing the person way before they are actually dead. That's too much for some people the first time that they encounter it. Obviously if it can happen to one person, it can happen to me, that's the scariest thing to think about. It's terrifying for a rational intelligent person to contemplate the possibility of losing their memories and aspects of themselves. The feeling of helplessness is overwhelming for everyone involved.

My aunt watched my Dad for an afternoon so I could take my Mom to her appt. and when I came home, my aunt was a complete wreck. I can't tell you how many times I've had to repeat myself, that's just life with an Alzheimer's patient, they often do not have good short term memory, nagging them isn't going to help them remember! My Aunt was really more upset that she wouldn't be able to talk about the old days with my Dad and her as kids. Loss comes in stages, so does the grief.

She was just really impatient with him. If he aked her a question and repeated it she'd yell at hi "You already asked that X number of times" or "I just told you". She just didn't understand the situation, or refused to understand.

-that both he and my Mom had their medications on time. I think honesty IS the best policy, if they ask how he's doing, start telling them until you sense that they can't take anymore. A lot of times they are really in fear for their own parents and they may be reacting to their own fears. As far as your sister, not being able to handle info about what he's like on a day to day basis, does she ever take care of him? It sounds like she was a little surprised at your description.

My Dad passed away in '02, but when he was alive and people would ask me that question, I always launched into the update with something like ,"Well everyday is a challenge". You now how it is, if it's their Doctor, I'd give a detailed blow by blow account of how my Dad was doing. I know what you mean, I have a video up about it and I mentioned what he was like, contantly restless and agitated. My youngest sister could not handle it at all.
The thing I don't know how to deal with is when people ask me how he is. How do you answer a question like that?
