Where a GT40 (40" high) was built depends on the MK number. The MK I 289 was built by Lola for 1965. The MK II 427 was built by Shelby American and Holman Moody for 1966 and 1967. The MK III 305 was limited production which led to the 1967 thru 1969 entries by John Wyer, winning in 1968 and 1969, with the famous 1969 finish by J. Ickx. The Mark IV 427 was derived from the J-Car, built in Detroit, highly unstable, it killed Ken Miles, Shelby American redesigned and renamed it the MK IV for 1967.

the glory days of racing! 1965 GT-40'S WERE 100% American made, they weren't built in britian, they were built here, carrol shelby and ford "kit bashed" their designs and came up with that sleek body. the motor was a 289 hipo v8 with webbers carburators, it was the 1965 gran prix that ford came in 1st;2nd;3rd and 4th over ferarri which had dominated the gran prix since the early 1950's. kingkobra

It is my understanding the 427 7liter motor were built by the Holman and Moody shop Dan Gurney and A J Floyt drove the winning car.Shelby obviously had a hand in the deal as he and Henry Ford II very close Shelby called him "The Duce".A great car and a wonderful eara of raceing .

The Ford GT was based on the Lola GT, designed and built in 1963 by Eric Broadley in England. Ford needed a mid engine endurance racer design and the Lola, with Ford V8, fit the bill. Ford modified and improved the Lola design and introduced it at LeMans in 1964. Orignally intended to use the Ford 4 cam Indianapolis engine but that proved to be too fragile and underpowered. The 1964 cars had a 289 but it took until 1966 (and a switch to 427 engines) before it finally won at LeMans.

To ribbonboy, I'll have to research that. It's always been my understanding that they were built in Dearborn, Michigan, by Ford & Carroll Shelby's engineers. Shelby's production facility was in Venice Beach California (near LAX) in the 60's. Carroll did have a relationship with AC cars in England during that time. I will call him and ask him, and let you know.
